Great Western Railway is located in southwest SK, and consists of a former CPKC rail line that was slated for abandonment. Established in 2000, we are locally owned by grain producers, ranchers, agricultural business & communities based primarily along our line.

Summary of the Role

Great Western Railway Ltd. is seeking a qualified Carman (Railcar Mechanic ) with a proven commitment to safety to fill a vacancy for full time coverage.  GWR is poised for growth across various industries and is seeking team oriented candidates to support our future. This position is based in Assiniboia SK.

Responsibilities would include, but not be limited to:
  • Performing inspections and repairs on rail cars
  • Adhere to deadlines and ensure all repairs meet AAR and/or Transport Canada regulations
  • Administrative tasks, such as accurate time keeping, repair schedule and job completion records
  • Involvement in the procurement of parts, equipment, and tools
  • Work with hand, power, pneumatic and hydraulic tools.
  • Welding
  • Incident response
  • Cleaning of rail cars
  • Be knowledgeable about a variety of documents including manufacturers’ manuals, technical bulletins, parts bulletins, service or preventative maintenance manuals, fact sheets, American Association of Railways (AAR) field manuals and government regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • 3+ years’ practical experience as a qualified Carman (railcar mechanic)
  • Welding certification and experience and air brake certification
  • Strong customer focus
  • Safety and results oriented with a solid mechanical background
  • Ability to perform hands-on repair to rail cars
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Ability to comply with instruction and comprehend published rules, procedures, inspection checklists, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions and other work-related information
  • Working knowledge of rail car mechanical systems, including air brake, welding and fabrication
Physical Requirements
  • Fine motor skills to use hand and power tools
  • Capable and willing to perform physically demanding work in an industrial environment in all weather conditions
  • Comfortable working at heights up to 10 m
  • Comfortable in confined spaces
